Hi! Your Ice Cream Looks Kinda Gross!

What’s the best way to show off ice cream? Less is more. And maybe keep that pink away from that brown.

Who doesn’t like ice cream? Haven’t met that human yet. Yes, some of us have allergies, or lactose intolerance, but even those with physiological curses can’t stop from glazing over at the idea of…ice cream. I mean, just look at it. It’s gorgeous, luscious.

I never had a thing for candy, not much for cake either. But ice cream…

My pint-sized indulgences had always been a problem, but they became supercharged with my purchase of a full-fledged Cuisinart ice cream maker. I rationalized it by telling myself that as a single dad of two boys, I needed some perks to keep the little guys interested in coming over for weekends and weeknights. Those pounds I gained are not fully off yet. I digress. Anyway, I’ve spent a most of my life eating ice cream, buying ice cream, making ice cream, and I guess you could say making a hobby of the damn stuff, so although I’m no Jon Snyder, I think all of that qualifies me to say a few things about it.

In this piece I offer suggestions for both web presence and in-store.

Web Presence: Mass of Fail

I was browsing for some good ice cream, and came across this. Maybe it was my mood in the moment. Maybe it was the way it hit. Maybe it was the way it looked like a cancerous mass. But I said to myself: this just ain’t right.

A moment about those flavor title choices. “Alumni Park After Dark”; “Berry Proud Parent.” I don’t have the context. Maybe these are nostalgic traditions. Or very nice stories with happy endings. But “Orange Custard Chocolate Chip.” Yes, we know eggs are the magic ingredient, but did we really need to shove them in between an already slightly challenging pairing of oranges and chocolate?

But back to our discussion on how we should show ice cream. A few reflections:

Show us some life. Jeez. Some of those servings weren’t even trying. The way they were apparently…
